Genomic epidemiology reveals geographical clustering of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli ST131 associated with bacteraemia in Wales

This study examines third-generation cephalosporin resistance in bloodstream infections caused by Escherichia coli ST131. 142 genomes were studied in Wales, with clade C/H30 predominant. Welsh strains contain β-lactamase genes, conferring resistance to cephalosporins. The study highlights the value of genomic epidemiology in detecting genetically similar strains in local areas, enabling targeted public health interventions.
